Kirk walked away from faith...
but he had one last chance to change
Many broken men come
through the door of the
Redwood Gospel Mission,
but hardly anyone comes in the way
Kirk did—straight from San Quentin,
handcuffed and in leg irons. If he
didn’t complete the residential
program, he was headed right back
to prison.
“I walked away from faith.”
Kirk hadn’t always been a criminal.
At one time, he was a devout
Christian and member of the Coast
Guard. But the military got in the way
of his getting high, so he quit. He
abandoned God as well. “I walked
away from faith, filling the void with
drugs and alcohol until I felt enough
pain to seek real change,” he explains.
Change came in the form of a four year
prison sentence for distribution
of meth and firearms. However, after
18 months, he was given the chance
to try the New Life Program. As you
know, the men’s program here at the
Mission has a lot to offer someone
like Kirk. Not only does it provide a
biblical approach to drug recovery,
it includes classes that teach men
like Kirk how to find and keep a job,
and how to make solid plans for
the future.
He has a passion
for recovery
It was difficult for Kirk to deal with
the fact that there was no quick
solution to his drug problem, but after
14 months in the New Life Program,
and almost a year in transitional
housing, Kirk left the Mission with
a grateful heart and a passion for
recovery. “I was overwhelmed with
gratitude and I still am! I was in a
cycle of addiction and jail that I
couldn’t break.”
He’s changing lives…
because you care!
Now Kirk has a job he loves, and is
extremely involved with church and
AA as a means of keeping him sober
and faithful. He works at the AA
hotline and even teaches a Recovery
101 class at the Mission, serving men
who are suffering from the same
affliction he once struggled with.
Every day, Kirk thanks the Lord for
compassionate friends like you who
provide support for those in need.
Transformations like his just wouldn’t
be possible without your help. Thank you for your provision!
