AT REDWOOD GOSPEL MISSIONS,
IT'S NOT JUST THE FOOD.

Some people might be skeptical that a $2.02 meal can change a life, but it really can.

When you are sleeping on the streets, haven’t had a hot meal in days and expect people to glare at you instead of smile, a meal cooked with love and served with compassion is a priceless gift.

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
–Jesus (John 6:51, NIV)

How Meals
Got Michael
Off The Streets

Michael came to the Mission because he needed food and shelter. He knew we were one of the few places in town that would offer him that, no strings attached.

“It was a safe place to be, it was a warm meal,” he says.

Once Michael was here and we started getting to know him, we could see that drugs and alcohol were destroying his life.

“I was tired of being miserable on the streets and wanting, feeling like I would rather die than move forward,” he remembers.

So, we told him about our New Life Recovery program. He decided to apply, got in and began learning about Jesus. Finally, after years of trying to get clean on his own, it clicked.

“It wasn’t until I came to the Mission, and I added God to the equation that things changed,” Michael says. “I went from being homeless and trying to drink myself to death to being genuinely happy. I don’t even recognize the person that I was going in. Because I’m not that person. It’s literally a new creation has come out of that.”

This Thanksgiving, Michael is three years sober, off the streets, married, walking with Jesus and working here at the Mission, helping feed 4,000 people all on one day – plus hundreds every day before Thanksgiving and after, too.

“The Redwood Gospel Missions continue to add significant value in our community. One of their greatest contributions to those they serve is the offering of hope. Hope for a better life, which is a benefit to all of us.”
